Bringing a new dog into an existing pack is never a small step. It’s a dance of personalities, instincts, and sometimes—let’s be honest—chaos. But when Riot joined our home, it was with open hearts, a bit of caution, and a whole lot of patience.
Riot came to us full of energy, uncertainty, and opinions. A beautiful Belgian Malinois, he was sharp, alert, and clearly used to fending for himself. From the first moment, it was clear he needed boundaries—but more importantly, he needed connection.
First Impressions & Furry Negotiations
The initial introductions with the rest of the dogs were surprisingly smooth—if you don’t count Nala, who immediately appointed herself “Queen of Everything” and insisted on reminding Riot that she was, in fact, first in line for everything from affection to air molecules.
Riot, to his credit, mostly accepted her royal declarations with stoic resignation, though he did test a few limits here and there. Nala’s raised eyebrows and dramatic sighs could rival a Shakespearean actress.
The Cat Conundrum
The cats, on the other hand, were a different story.
Riot didn’t exactly view them as companions at first—more like fast-moving mysteries that triggered every chase instinct in his brain. But we took it slow. Room by room, barrier by barrier, treat by treat. Riot learned that the cats belonged here too.
Now, he can be in the same room with them, lying calmly while they tiptoe past with that signature feline disdain. I’m not naïve—we don’t leave them alone together—but we’ve come a long way from the days of wild-eyed stares and tense muscles. There’s tolerance now. Maybe even acceptance. Or at least mutual eye-rolling.
One-on-One Time
To give Riot space to bond with us directly, we’ve made time for solo adventures. Walks just with him. Quiet moments in the garden. Training sessions where it’s just our voices and his focused gaze.
Those one-on-one outings have been crucial. It’s where trust began to take root—where he learned that he didn’t need to compete for affection or attention. That he was home.
Building a Life Together
Pack dynamics aren’t built in a day. Some days are easier than others. Some days feel like we’re juggling personalities with a blindfold on. But every day, we see more calm, more connection, and more of Riot’s beautiful, sensitive spirit.
He’s not just adjusting—he’s becoming. A little more “ours” every single day.
This journey isn’t perfect, and it certainly isn’t quiet (especially when Nala is making her proclamations). But it’s real, it’s heartfelt, and it’s full of moments that make all the work worth it.
Welcome to the chaos, Riot. You’re one of us now!
